Looking at buying a 2008 Ford Focus but I’m not sure if it’s a good idea. Any advice?
I get 34 highway and 24 city in a 2010 SEL automatic. That 40 mpg claim might be a stretch.
Check the rocker panels for rust, especially at the bottom seams. Rust is a big problem for these cars and was the end for my last one.
Also, check the AC. These cars are notorious for AC issues. I had to replace both the compressor and evaporator core in my 2010, and it was pricey. Maybe the 2008 model is a bit better, but fixing AC in these cars isn’t cheap because everything is crammed in there.
The engine and transmission can last up to 200k miles with proper maintenance, but a lot of other parts tend to wear out. Be ready for some upkeep.
Also, check out carcomplaints.com—it’s super helpful for spotting common issues.

Totally agree. I averaged the same mileage as you and had to replace the AC compressor and condenser. After that, it failed again, and fixing it wasn’t worth it.
The interior parts feel pretty flimsy, but the car itself is super reliable.

I can get 40 mpg if I reset the gauge right before hitting an open highway and drive carefully. In the city, though, it’s closer to 25.
You should buy it if it checks out. The coupes look great, and the Duratec engine paired with the manual transmission is solid for up to 250k miles if you take care of it. I get around 31 mpg in mixed driving, and I’m not exactly gentle with it.
The price might be low because it’s a manual, and not many people buy manuals anymore unless it’s something like a Mustang. Bring someone who knows about cars to the test drive and have them inspect it. Even if something’s wrong, repairs on these cars are cheap, and parts are easy to find.
Thanks for the advice on checking for rust and AC issues! I’ll bring a flashlight and inspect it thoroughly. My daily commute is 150 miles, split between 55 mph and 65 mph, so I need something reliable.
I have an 08 SE automatic, and it’s indestructible. Best car I’ve owned.
I’ve got the 08 SES. It’s been surprisingly reliable for a Ford. Just a few repairs here and there. Rust on the seams and bottom is pretty common, but make sure it’s not excessive. Maintenance is straightforward, and acceleration is decent.
I have an 07 manual with the same engine. My 100-mile daily commute at 65-70 mph gets me 34 mpg consistently. It’s a great car if you stick to regular maintenance.
Mine has 207,000 miles and still runs great.
@Vero
What’s your RPM at 70 mph?
Three grand for a high-mileage Focus? Wow.

Yeah, it sucks. It’s just the way things are now.
40 mpg is probably pushing it, even on the highway. When test driving, keep the radio and AC off to listen for any odd noises. Turn the AC on to see if it works—it’s a common problem area.
The price drop might mean there’s a mechanical issue, so look for worn gaskets, boots, or other rubber parts, especially with its age and mileage.
If I buy it and find minimal rust on the rocker panels, is there something I can use to stop it from spreading?

Honestly, once rust starts, it’s tough to stop. But it’s a $3k car, so rust probably won’t be your biggest issue. Just keep an eye on it.
Why do cars in the US have such massive bumpers?
I have an 08. Transmission issues and oil valve leaks are common. Mine needed both fixed—the transmission right before the warranty ended in 2011 and the oil valves more recently.
Also, check the engine mounts. Mine are having issues now.
I just did a 275-mile trip with my family and luggage. Got 41 mpg for the whole drive. It’s definitely possible.
I’ve got an 09 automatic coupe with 204k miles. It’s been solid with regular oil changes and new tires. I’ve only had to replace the upper radiator hose and brakes once. Planning to do motor mounts and brake pads soon. The plastic interior parts do wear out over time, though.
An 08 Focus coupe for this price? Definitely go for it. Have you seen many others? They’re rare.
Mine has 325k miles and still runs great.
