My 2014 Focus stopped shifting into gear, and I noticed a clicking sound coming from the transmission. A shop inspected it and found that a bracket/mount had broken off inside the transmission case, causing everything to spin and preventing the transmission from shifting or being programmed correctly. They mentioned that this issue is fairly common, so I’m curious if anyone else has experienced this?
It sounds like they’re talking about the internal case stops. This issue can happen, but it’s not super common. Hopefully, they diagnosed it properly. We tend to see this more often in the later model years. Unfortunately, it’s a very expensive repair—usually, a full overhaul or replacement is the only fix.
@Asa
They’re quoting $1770 for a new case, seals, fluid, and labor. I’ve had a lot of transmission work done over the past 3 years, including two full rebuilds.

$1770 for everything is actually a very good deal. At a dealer, it would probably cost four times that much.
@Asa
The two times I’ve had a dealership look at my car, they always wanted to fix everything but the actual problem, or they lied about what was wrong. I was definitely concerned about the price.
@Han
I got lucky—they had an old transmission at the shop, so they only charged $50 for the case. Unfortunately, I don’t have most of the tools or the space to work on it myself.
@Han
Unless you have serious auto repair skills, I would 100% not recommend doing this repair at home. Transmission work is extremely detailed. I’ve done this repair many times.
