At the start of summer, my A/C stopped blowing cold air, but the heat still worked. Now, the heat doesn’t work either. Both settings blow the same temperature, but I do hear a sound change when I switch from cold to hot. Any ideas on what could be wrong?
Are you low on antifreeze and need stats on car…
It might be low on antifreeze. What do you mean by “stats”? It’s a 2012 SE with 200k miles, and the coolant reservoir has a small leak that I plan to fix this week.
also be sure to check that there’s the refrigerant.
The heater works by sending hot coolant from the engine through pipes into the cabin. The blower motor then blows air over these hot pipes, which makes the air warm coming out of the vents. So, if you have a coolant leak, it makes sense that you might not get hot air.
If you already knew this, just ignore it.
For the heat, since you know there’s a coolant leak, check the reservoir to see if it’s very low or empty.
You might also be low on refrigerant, which can stop the A/C from working. You can buy pressure gauges to test the refrigerant level, or get a refill kit for $25-$40 that includes a gauge. Recharging is simple, just don’t add too much.
If you use the kit while the car and A/C are running, and the gauge drops below full or doesn’t show anything, you can use the refrigerant you have to refill it.
These are the cheap and quick steps I’d try first before spending too much time and money.
