Buying my first car (19) (Ford Focus) - advice!

I recently landed a full-time job and am ready to buy my first car! My main purpose is commuting to work and occasionally making long trips to visit family. I’ve narrowed my options down to these three:

  1. 2010 Mazda Axela: 1998cc, 84,100km, $11K
  2. 2012 Holden Cruze SRI V HB T: 1364cc, 100,012km, $10K
  3. 2013 Ford Focus: 1990cc, 109,600km, $11K

I’m leaning toward the Ford Focus, but I’ve read a lot about transmission issues. Should I ask about the maintenance history for these cars? Any advice on affordability, maintenance, or durability for a first car would be greatly appreciated!

Avoid the Ford Focus with Powershift transmission—those are notorious for issues. Mazda is your best bet here. Reliable, affordable, and long-lasting.

As a mechanic, I can’t recommend the Cruze. They’re cheaply made with expensive repair cycles. Go for the Mazda instead!

Check if the Axela has side airbags for added safety. Some older Japanese models lack them.

If you’re serious about the Focus, confirm the transmission type. Avoid the Powershift. Get an independent inspection, regardless of where you buy.

I’ve had great experiences with my Mazda Axela. Reliable, easy to drive, and a good long-term choice.

I own a 2013 Focus, and while it’s fun to drive, it has quirks like water leaks and the infamous transmission issues. Proceed with caution.

Prioritize safety features, especially as a young driver. The Axela is likely the safest choice here.

Thanks for all the advice! I’ll look deeper into the Axela and prioritize safety and reliability. Planning to get an independent inspection before finalizing anything.
