I have a 2012 Titanium, and this car has been giving me nothing but trouble. Now I can’t turn it off! It has push/start, and I’m stuck here trying to figure out what to do.
Is it a manual? If so, you can try stalling it – put it in 6th gear, press the brake, and drop the clutch. This is actually useful for emergencies, like if you ever have a diesel runaway. Happened to me once on a 2015 model.
@Wilder
6th gear is best because the car will lurch less than in a lower gear. Less torque in 6th, so it’s a bit smoother if you need to stall it.
@Wilder
Unfortunately, it’s automatic. I’ve been told it might be the ignition switch.

In that case, I’d look up the fuse for the fuel pump or injectors in the manual and pull it to make the car die from fuel starvation. But be cautious, especially if there’s no primer pump.
Cars need fuel, air, and spark to run – cut one, and it’ll stop. If this is the first time it’s happened, I’d drive it straight to a garage just in case it refuses to start again. Electrical issues like these are tricky, and I’d rather leave them to the pros.

Also, don’t pull the battery while it’s running – that can mess up the electrical system. The alternator will still power the car, but it’s unregulated and can cause power spikes that could damage the ECU.
Try pulling the fuel pump relay or fuse.
Sometimes it just takes longer to turn off. Try this:
- Make sure it’s in park.
- Start the engine with the push button, then press it again to turn it off.
- Engage the parking brake.
If it’s still acting up, get out and walk about 50 feet away. Wait another 10 minutes. If it doesn’t shut off, well, maybe call an exorcist!
Sometimes sitting inside, opening, and then closing the door does the trick.
You could try disconnecting the battery.
I had a similar issue – mine wouldn’t fully go into park, so it stayed in gear. I had to mess with the shifter a bit, and eventually, it went into park and turned off.
