Considering a 2018 Ford Focus S for $4,200 - Good Deal or Stay Away?

Hi all,

I’m checking out a 2018 Ford Focus S with 120K miles listed at $4,200. I’ve heard mixed opinions about this generation, especially concerning the automatic transmission. Any advice on what I should be looking for? Is there anything specific to this model year that I need to be cautious about?

Thanks in advance for any insights!

If it’s an automatic, run! These transmissions have serious issues, and it’s getting hard to find new TCM units. Ford may not even warranty them past the end of this year. Manual transmissions are solid, though, so if you find a stick shift, it’s worth it.

If it’s an automatic, you might want to budget for a $3k-$5k repair in the future. If it’s a manual, it’s a solid choice.

It’s an automatic.

In that case, I’d look for anything else.

Regardless, it’s always a good idea to invest in a full mechanical inspection with any used car.

My wife’s 2016 I-3 EcoBoost needed a new engine before 60K miles. My 2018 NA I-4 is okay, but the DCT transmission is like a ticking time bomb. I’d also suggest getting the VIN and checking for any recalls; some engines have issues with the oil belt tensioner.

Wouldn’t recommend. I’m selling mine with 95K miles because the transmission is failing.

Is it the torque converter auto or the dual-clutch?

There’s a reason it’s cheap.

Does it have a wet belt?

The DCT autos have had so many issues that it’s amazing they’re still on the market. Even the torque converter autos are problematic. Mine’s still working, but it’s showing signs of wear at 80K km. Ford’s latest models are better, but these older autos are best avoided.
