First car advice... hatchback focus options?

Hi everyone, I’m about to get my license, and my dad insists on getting me a Focus hatchback. I’ve got some decisions to make and could use advice.

I’m torn between going for a standard SE hatchback, which I could modify a bit (like adding an RS spoiler), or going for an ST. The regular Focus would be cheaper, and I’d probably go with a manual since the automatics are known to be unreliable (though I’d have to learn stick since I’ve never driven one). The ST looks perfect and has everything I’d want cosmetically, but I’m not into speed, and it might be overkill for me as a first car.

The other issue is cost—insurance for the ST would likely be much higher since it’s considered a sports car. My budget is around $6,000 to $10,000, and my dad is set on a Focus, so other cars aren’t really an option.

What do you think? Should I go for the regular SE and customize it, or stretch for the ST?

For your first car, I’d stick with something cheap and reliable. Owning a car costs more than just the purchase—maintenance and repairs can add up. Plus, you’re likely to bump or scratch it while you’re still learning.

Manuals are more fun and avoid the bad auto transmission issues. If you’re set on a Focus, I’d suggest looking at a 2010-2011 model with a regular automatic if you really don’t want a manual. Just watch for rust.

Oh, and stay away from black cars—they heat up like crazy in the sun.

Thanks! But is having a black car really that bad? I was thinking black, blue, or red.

I’ve got a black 08 Focus, and yep, it’s bad. On a sunny day, it turns into an oven. If you don’t have strong AC, it’s unbearable. My white Focus stays much cooler in the same conditions.

Honestly, it’s not that bad unless you’re in extreme heat. I’ve been driving a black Focus in Florida for years. It’s hot when you first get in during the summer, but so is every other car.

Run some insurance quotes before deciding. You might be surprised by the cost differences. Also, avoid the 1.0 Ecoboost engines—they’re notorious for issues.

I’d recommend the SE manual. It’s cheaper, has lower insurance costs, and you can always modify it for a sportier feel—like engine mounts or exhaust upgrades. If you want more power later, you can always add a tune.

Good point about the gas mileage and mods. Thanks for the tip!

I have an SE manual too, and I agree. I even painted my brake calipers for a pop of color—it makes a big difference.

Keep it simple for your first car. Avoid turbo models and the dual-clutch transmission. Once you’ve got more experience, you can always upgrade to a sportier model.

If you’re in the UK, they have ST-Line Focuses that look sporty without the high insurance costs. Worth checking out if that’s an option.
