I’m looking into the Ford Focus Active 2023 because it fits my budget and the infotainment is great. But is it worth spending 32k on a Ford Focus?
Yeah mate, the Focus is far better than some cheap Ora Cat or similar, go for it. It’s only 32k.
Edit: I just realized you’re talking about the Active, I take it back.

Ahhh, sheet, I read the first half and then realized there’s an edit.
@Toryn
Nah, I mean if you like it, then go for it, as I said, it’s only 32k. But I could never compliment a crossover, either be a hatchback or be an SUV, don’t try to be both.
I have a friend who works at a Ford dealer/service center, and they’d wholeheartedly recommend staying away from Fords unless you want it to spend a lot of time in the workshop.

I’m a careful driver and rarely scratch my car. Or did your friend refer to the engines failing automatically?
I have the ST hybrid and love it! I looked at a bunch of other cars, but this one had the best features for the budget.

The one I’m looking at is not ST, just a normal Active version. My main concern is the maintenance fees.
@Toryn
The ST isn’t much different (heated seats and windscreen). My last service was $500, with $120 of that for maps (which I don’t use because I prefer Google and CarPlay). They told me my regular mechanic can handle the service as long as they use approved parts. I was surprised by the first service cost!
@Flynt
It’s not too bad, though.
@Flynt
Have you had any issues with the car? Since the Focus is kind of dead in the NZ market, I’m also considering the Yaris Cross.

The Yaris Cross was my first choice, but the features and price didn’t compare. I’ve had no issues with the Focus and get good mileage. I think the Focus will make a comeback now that it looks and performs better.
@Flynt
Thanks, man! Since it’s my first car ever and it’s a 1.0L, I’m not too sure how it will perform haha.

If you’re looking for something decent, check out the Kia Stonic. Avoid the 1.4, go for the 1.0 turbo. It’s packed with features.
I had a Yaris Cross (ICE) as a rental last week. It’s the cheapest-made vehicle, and the engine is terrible. Infotainment is shocking, wired CarPlay is gross, and the whole car felt outdated. The only decent part was the reverse camera.
What’s making you look at this type of vehicle? I have another suggestion if you’re after something small, fuel-efficient, stylish, and tech-packed.
@Shawn
TBH, I looked into the Yaris Cross because my colleague was pushing it. One of the main reasons I’m considering the Focus is the big screen, medium size, average fuel consumption, and it’s affordable. LOL.
@Toryn
I think we’ve all been pushed by previous generations into thinking Toyota is the only option.
Are they bad? No. Do they do anything exceptionally well? No. Are they exciting? No. But they are expensive for what you get.
I made the mistake of going for a Kia Seltos for work, but after 12 months, I swapped back to my happy place: a small hatchback that’s quicker, better looking, and more fuel-efficient. It puts a smile on my face every time I get in. So, drive what makes you happy!

Yeah, test drive one and see how it performs for yourself. I find that the hybrid engine gives extra power to your 1.0L. When compared to my friend’s new 1.8L Corolla, the Focus is quicker off the mark and has a higher top speed (their words, not mine).

Same for us. The interest-free loan from the bank clinched it, and the wife loved it as soon as she got in. Hated the Puma and the Escape was too far out of our budget.
The only downside is the wireless charger causes our phones to overheat. Ford said to plug them in, which then makes wireless CarPlay redundant…
@Palmer
Wireless charging always causes the phone to overheat, so I rarely use it, which is sad.

I’ve got other wireless chargers that don’t cause that issue.
