Ford Focus: which model

Given EcoBoost and Powershift both are negatively reviewed by the community, which Ford Focus model should I buy? Looking for something with 40-60K miles, petrol, automatic and budget around 6-10K.

The above two models are like 90% of the results on auto-trader, so I’m confused whether this means rule out used Focus completely. Thanks for helping.

I would genuinely avoid all Focus models if you’re set on petrol and automatic. Unfortunately, I don’t have a better suggestion, but you could consider a Skoda Octavia if practicality and reliability are priorities.

Most Focus models with automatics use the Powershift transmission, which has a poor reliability track record.

Why are you specifically considering a Focus?

I have a family with two kids, so I need a hatchback. Apart from the Focus, I’m also considering the Toyota Auris, Honda Civic, and Hyundai ix20.

If you’re looking for reliability, I’d recommend going for a Honda Civic or Toyota Auris over a Focus. They may not be as engaging to drive, but they’re more dependable.

I’d avoid the Hyundai ix20. It feels top-heavy and unstable compared to other options. If you’re looking for something from Hyundai, consider the i30. It offers better driving dynamics and build quality.

If you’re open to diesel, the 1.5 TDCi in the Focus is a solid choice with better reliability than the Powershift-equipped petrol models.

If reliability is your priority, consider a Toyota Corolla or a used Prius. Even with high mileage, they’re known for their longevity and trouble-free operation.

If you’re set on a Focus, the 1.6 petrol with a manual transmission is the best choice for reliability.
