Found my old car up for sale… they’re asking way more than I’d pay!

The dealership gave us $1,500 for it, then put $3-4k into repairs. Honestly, I wouldn’t buy it back for the price they’re asking.

Typical. Dealerships and car salesmen can be such scams.

The worst part is they originally only offered us $500! Didn’t feel right selling it privately with the transmission issues, though.

Yeah, they add on profit and overhead… it’s all about business.

Used to work in both new and used car sales, and honestly, I wouldn’t recommend going to a dealership unless you have to. I’d avoid them like the plague.

Exactly, they tack on $5-7k in overhead, even for older cars with known issues. It’s ridiculous.

@Jensen
Yeah, they justify it with costs for repairs, reconditioning, advertising, and all the other fees. It adds up quick.

I got my SE in 2021 with 62k miles for $11,500. These dealerships overcharge like crazy. If I’d known better, I wouldn’t have spent that much!

I bought mine in 2017 with 50k miles for $12,000. Now I wish I’d gone for an ST instead.

I feel for you. Someone will buy mine too, and probably won’t even do their research.

@Hartley
Oh yeah, someone definitely will. Honestly, I’m grateful for the experience—it taught me a lot about car repairs. I’ve got mine at 100k miles now with only minor issues. I’d never recommend these cars, though!

@Hux
Nice! We had ours for five years too. Paid $12k back then. Crazy how they’re asking so much now when it barely depreciated.

Right? These cars lose value fast. At 100k miles, they’re usually only worth around $4,500, even in great condition. Dealerships just mark them up like crazy.

@Hux
Yeah, we thought we did okay trading it in, but now they’ll probably make $6k off it. They even listed the transmission as a 5-speed manual instead of an automatic. Odd choice.

Honestly, you got a fair price considering the work it needed. I’d pay for a manual, but never an automatic with those issues.

@Hux
True, dealerships really are something else. We got a 2019 RAV4 for $24,999 with 50k miles. Hopefully, it’ll last a lot longer!

Good choice! Take care of it, and it’ll easily go another 200k miles.

@Hux
That’s the plan! Thinking of getting a car wash subscription to deal with the Minnesota snow.

Subscriptions are great for winter. Keeps the salt off and helps avoid rust. Good call!

The high prices are partly due to COVID and the chip shortage. Parts were tough to get for a while.
