Finally got my first car, and it’s a 2017 EV model! Wondering if anyone else has experience with these. Any tips on maintenance?
An EV third gen? You don’t see those every day! The facelift on these was interesting too, with that mix of Mk3 and Mk3.5 parts.

Feels as rare as some high-end sports cars… just without the fame!
Wait, I didn’t know they made EV versions of the Focus!

Yeah, they’re super rare! Only about 1800 were sold here in the US. I stumbled upon it on Facebook Marketplace and had no idea they existed either!
I have a short commute and have had my '17 for about 2.5 years now. It’s been good, though I don’t rack up much mileage. Maybe 30,000 km since I got it.
They should honestly bring this look back.
Get ready for the headaches… these EVs can be a handful!

I get why people are downvoting, but I can’t lie—you’re not totally wrong. I wish someone had given me a heads-up on the issues when I got my Focus! Here’s hoping things go smoother for OP.
@Will
What issues should I expect? I know gas models have transmission problems, but mine’s electric, so I thought I’d be in the clear.

With EVs, the big worry is usually the battery. They can last around 8-10 years, but replacements are crazy expensive, often more than the car’s value. That’s why EVs drop in price so fast.
@Haru
Since mine’s out of production and rare, I doubt they’d offer replacement batteries anyway. But I’m not too concerned… I live somewhere mild, and my battery’s in good shape. I’m even getting more range than Ford originally advertised!
Plus, I see a lot of old Nissan Leafs still on the road, and they didn’t have the best battery systems. I think this one will hold up.

The gas models had bad auto transmissions, but the older Focus Electrics (2012-2016) had issues with battery coolant leaks, which could be a mess. The '17-'18 models fixed that but have a potential issue with the contactors overheating… that’s the click you hear when the battery connects to the motor.

Those EVs aren’t great, huh?
I’ve seen some for under $8k with low miles… kinda tempting even if the range isn’t long. It would be enough for my commute.
@Dane
I got mine for about $5k USD with taxes included, under 60k miles. I was deciding between this and a first-gen Leaf—no contest there!

Wow, that’s cheap!
I don’t get why that guy was warning you so hard.
@Dane
Yeah, it was a steal, especially with the leather seats and overall condition.

Does the range cover what you need?
I think there could be a good market for EVs with smaller batteries if they charge up quickly.
@Dane
I don’t commute with it, public transport works better for me. But for trips to friends within 40 minutes or so, it’s been totally fine.
