How reliable has your 2008-2011 Ford Focus been?

Looking at buying a 2008 Focus with 164k miles Monday. They’re asking $3000 and it’s in good condition. I’m familiar with the generation before and the generation after. Did this generation have any major issues to look out for?

Just hit 400,000 miles the other day on my 2008 Focus SE 5 Speed.

Mine, an 09, has been very reliable. Had it for about 40k miles so far. The only out-of-ordinary problem I know about is that the motor mounts need to be replaced more frequently than normal. Oh, and they can get quite rusty. My mom’s Focus, an 08, is at 325k miles and still trucking along.

Stupid reliable. I had one for a while and got rid of it with 240k miles. Just change the oil on time.

Very good engine. Rocker panel rust is common. New motor mounts—about $100–$120 in parts—will make it smooth. Front anti-sway bar links will stop the rattle at low speeds on small bumps. Very easy fixes.

One of the most reliable cars ever made if they are gasoline. The Zetec (later Duratec) engine is bulletproof.

Bought mine with 70k miles; it has 130k now. Tires and brakes, that’s it. Only hiccup I had was the motor mount needed to be replaced.

2010 SES. Mechanically the only problem I’ve ever had was the cylinder head temp sensor needed to be changed around 100k. Also, if rust has started on the rocker panels in a winter salt climate, it won’t last long.

My 2008 has 417,000 miles—original motor, transmission, and clutch. Just maintenance and wearable parts.

Best kept secret if you want a long-lasting car on a budget. My friend has over 230K on the original powertrain. Somehow Ford actually made a reliable car. Can’t say the same for the rest of their lineup.

I absolutely love this generation of the Ford Focus! I own two of them. Preventative maintenance is key, and these cars will take you anywhere. Replace motor mounts every two years and watch for crankshaft pulley wobble to avoid issues.
