Hey all! I bought a 2013 Ecoboost (1.0L manual, petrol) last year with 74k miles. Did the wet belt, water pump, and oil pump right after buying it. I drive a lot, over 15k miles a year, so I’m wondering if it’s smart to get the oil changed twice a year or even more? Should I be looking at full servicing every 6 months too? It’s at 88k miles now, and I just want to make sure it lasts as long as possible since I’ve read about the issues with these engines. Any advice would be appreciated!
I use Motorcraft full synthetic every 3000 miles, and it’s been a solid engine with no issues so far. Maybe that’s a good routine for you too?
I’ve got a 2015 Ecoboost, and I get the oil changed every 5k miles at the Ford dealer. I’m at 113k miles, and the only major thing I had to replace was the coolant container. Still running well!
I’ve got the same car with 94k km. I do a full oil and filter change at the dealer every year since I only drive about 10k km a year. Planning to do the wet belt next September. So far, so good!

Nice! I had the wet belt done last year, but it was pricey – paid around 1500£ for the whole job. Hoping that’s going to keep things running smoothly for a while.
@Shay
Sounds about right. That’s what a wet belt replacement usually costs with these engines.

Yeah, Ford quoted me nearly double that for the same job, so I’m glad I found another option.
@Shay
That’s the industry for you. I remember when they claimed the wet belt would last the engine’s lifetime! Service interval now is 10 years or 100k miles, right?

That’s what I was told. Funny thing is, I was assured it had a chain when I bought it – quite the surprise finding out it was a belt after all.
@Shay
Yeah, the awareness around wet belts and their maintenance costs is finally catching up with more car owners.
I change the oil every 6 months – do it myself in June, and the dealer does it in January along with the MOT. Bought mine at 47k miles and now it’s at 79k. I drive around 18k miles a year, so changing oil every 9k miles. Short trips wear down the wet belt faster, so if you’re doing long drives, you might be good with a similar routine.
Sounds like I should be getting the oil changed more than twice a year, then! I wish I knew how to do it myself.

It’s not that hard. You could get a jack and some stands and try it. I was totally new to DIY car stuff but picked it up.
@Axelle
I feel clueless with cars, honestly. Would love to learn, though. Just don’t know anyone who could teach me.

YouTube is a great resource! I met a guy with the same car, and he helped me learn a few basics. Look up a video – you might be surprised by how easy an oil change actually is.
I bought a 2017 1.0 Ecoboost last month and had an overheating warning after just a 4-minute drive home from work. My mechanic told me to return it – in his words, these engines are known as ‘Ecoboom.’ The engine is a bit too small for a car this size.
@Lior
Yikes
@Lior
Can’t say I disagree. These engines have earned the nickname ‘Ecoboom.’ I have a diesel Focus, and it’s been way more reliable. Might be worth looking at different engines if you’re in for the long haul.
Mine had issues at 56k and then again at 74k, despite regular oil changes every 3500 miles at the dealer. Fortunately, there was a recall.

What happened?
