I have a 2018 Focus with about 60,000 miles, bought new. I took it to the Ford dealer for The Works package since I had a discount. They always call before doing any repairs. Today, they said I need new front brakes, a brake flush, and new lug nuts. I told them I’d think about it, and they were not pushy at all.
The quote came to about $1,200 for everything, including an oil change and inspection. This seems high to me, but I’ve never done this stuff before. I usually ask my dad, who knows more about cars. He thinks they might be taking advantage of me and suggesting repairs I don’t need. However, I’ve been there many times, and they usually say nothing is wrong.
Has anyone had experience with Ford service departments regarding their trustworthiness and prices? Are these repairs normal for this age and mileage? I want to find the best option and not overpay. I might have someone I know do the repairs, but I’d like to get it sorted before a road trip in a few weeks.
Thanks, that’s good to know. I’ll check the papers later and ask someone I know to take a look. Right now, I know my brakes are at 3mm. My road trip is going to be about 2k miles.
At 60k miles, you probably need new front brakes. About the lug nuts, the original two-piece do really need to be replaced ASAP, but don’t get the same kind again. They are really expensive from the dealer, and they’ll just get damaged again. Just consider a single-piece steel nuts, which are much cheaper to buy. Also, since your car is about you said 6 years old, it’s a good idea to do a brake flush if you haven’t done it yet.
Dealerships are often a little bit more expensive compared to regular shops. Replacing brakes is one of the easiest repairs. If you can’t do it yourself, take your car to an independent shop.
Thank you! I have a lot on my plate right now and can’t learn this at the moment. I hope to find a local shop or a friend who can help me if they have time.
Do yourself a favour and find a good local mechanic and take your car to them. The dealer has lied to me many times about things I didn’t actually need.
Also, just buy the right Dorman lug nuts on Amazon and have your mechanic put them on. Ford’s lug nuts have been a problem for a long time, and if they were honest, they would replace them for you for free.
