Should I repair or sell my 2014 Focus?

Hey everyone, I’ve got a 2014 Ford Focus manual that’s starting to give me problems. The flywheel needs replacing, wishbones are shot, and there are other smaller repairs needed like a new battery, EGR, and fixing a broken fan. Altogether, the repair bill is looking like $2.5k.

The car is worth around $6-7k, and I’ve already had to fix a faulty injector and put in a new radiator since I bought it a year ago. It has 120,000km on the clock. Buying a new car isn’t ideal because of the cost, so I’m leaning toward repairing it. But I’m worried this might just be the beginning of bigger issues.

What would you do in my situation? Is it worth fixing, or should I cut my losses?

If the car is otherwise in good shape, I’d get the repairs done. What else can you get for $2.5k that’s reliable?

The manual version of the Focus is solid. I’d fix it, especially if buying another car means going into debt. Car payments are the worst.

Those repairs shouldn’t cost $2.5k!

A lot of it is labor, especially for the flywheel. Labor costs are steep here in the UK. :confused:

What exactly is wrong with the flywheel?

@Lex
There’s a loud rattling noise in first and second gear, and I can feel vibrations through the clutch. It comes and goes, and I can still change gears fine. The mechanic said the flywheel is worn down but could last a bit longer. They recommended fixing it now to avoid a breakdown later.

@Lux
That doesn’t sound like the flywheel to me. A flywheel is a heavy solid piece of metal. The only time I’ve seen a flywheel cause noise is when the teeth are ground down, and that only makes noise during startup.

@Lex
Interesting! Both the mechanic I saw and a second one said it was the flywheel. Any idea what else could cause this kind of noise?

Could be the clutch or pressure plate, but that usually affects shifting. Strange it’s only in first and second gear. Maybe something internal in the transmission or possibly the CV axles.

@Lex
Thanks for the input. I’ll look into those possibilities before going ahead with the repair.
