Thinking about buying a Ford Focus… should I?

If it’s a 1.0L EcoBoost, I’d avoid it. I bought a 2017 model, and within 10 minutes, the engine overheated. Mechanic said the car’s too big for that engine. I ended up trading it for a 1.5L diesel, and it’s been great.

@Maxwell
Just to confirm, you’re looking at a 1.0L? I’d avoid it 100%.

Stay away from EcoBooms. Not worth the risk.

I have a 2019 1.0 Wagon with a chain instead of a belt, but the oil pump still has a wet belt. Should be fine if the right oil is used consistently.

I’m currently driving a Focus Active and always make sure the correct oil is used. I even buy it myself to avoid garages using the wrong grade.

@Landry
Good call! I did the same with my 2019 Mk4. Bought it used in 2022 with a complete Ford service history. Wouldn’t have done it if I wasn’t sure about proper maintenance.

I’d avoid 3-cylinder engines—they’re known to blow up easily.

Look up Stern Law and the mass action lawsuits involving the Focus and Fusion. I’m part of it, and let me tell you, it’s been a nightmare. Used to be a loyal Ford buyer, but never again.

If you can, go for the 1.6 turbo—it’s a blast to drive!
