Considering a Ford Focus SVT with high mileage (120k-160k) or one with a rebuilt engine and high body mileage for daily driving and occasional autocross. Are these reliable for my intended use, or should I be cautious?
The SVT is a great car, but its engine is an interference design, so a timing belt failure is catastrophic. Look for a Duratec ZX3/5 with a manual instead, add SVT suspension (still available new), and you’ll get most of the performance without the risks.

I was debating between the ZX3 with SVT suspension and the SVT itself. The SVT seems nicer, but the ZX3 might be more reliable.

The SVT has better looks and features, but a Duratec ZX3 with SVT suspension is more affordable and reliable. Plus, the Duratec has more tuning potential.
High mileage on a performance car can be a red flag due to how they’re driven. Rebuilt engines are risky unless professionally done with documentation. If you’re looking for a reliable daily driver, I’d look elsewhere. If you’re willing to put in work and budget for repairs, it could be a fun project.
@Merlin
That’s fair. I’ve researched common issues and feel confident doing most repairs myself. I was more curious about how the body holds up under occasional autocross.
I wouldn’t buy a car that’s been autocrossed—those are likely pushed to the limit. If you’re planning to autocross yourself, just be prepared for eventual wear and tear. These cars are easy to work on but may not make the best daily drivers.
@Kai
I wouldn’t buy a previously autocrossed car, but I’d like to use it for autocross occasionally. I’ll keep repair costs in mind.
I’d avoid the SVT unless you’re ready to deal with potential transmission issues. The Getrag 6-speed doesn’t have many parts available, so a rebuild could require replacing the entire unit. A Duratec Focus might be a better option for daily driving and light racing.
As a former Focus owner, I recommend looking elsewhere. My Focus (non-SVT) had numerous issues, including a plastic cooling system that required frequent repairs. These are economy cars made with budget parts, and that shows with age.
Not all Focus models are bad. I had an ’06 that was practically indestructible and made it to 190k miles. That said, newer models with the Duratec engine are generally better than the older Zetec or SVT models.
The best advice I can give you is: don’t get it.

Why do you think that? Is it the mileage, the rebuilt engine, or the car in general?
