I’m looking to purchase a 2018 Ford Focus with a 5-speed manual transmission and 30k miles. I know the automatics have a bad reputation, but how reliable are the manuals? It has a 2.0L I4 DGI Ti-VCT engine, and I’m wondering if this is a good choice for a simple, non-turbo, timing-chain engine. I’m also a DIYer, so ease of maintenance is a big factor.
The manuals are solid. Ti-VCT just means variable valve timing, which is common and reliable. It’s not turbocharged, and it has a timing chain, so you’re good there. Manuals in Focuses are a good choice because they dodge the automatic transmission issues.
@Tatum
Good to know! I didn’t realize how common variable valve timing is these days. Thanks for the info!
Manual Focuses avoid the notorious automatic transmission problems. Plus, manual cars can be a deterrent to car thieves. It’s a solid option if you’re set on a manual.

That’s definitely one reason I want a manual, especially living in Chicago. Thanks!
As a former Ford mechanic, the manual transmission Focuses are great. The automatics were the problem. It also has a timing chain, so that’s one less thing to worry about. Just keep up with regular oil changes (every 3,000 miles) to keep everything running smoothly.

Thanks for the detailed advice! Chains are definitely my preference. How easy would you say the rest of the car is to work on for a DIYer?

They’re not too difficult for someone with experience. Just remember, like with any used car, how it was maintained by the previous owner matters. If you’re confident in your skills, it should be a good fit.
I own a 2018 Focus (sadly with the automatic, but planning to swap to a manual). It’s straightforward to work on, and a Haynes manual makes it even easier.
Any updates on what you decided to buy?
