Thoughts on Ford Focus S 2014-2016

Looking for feedback on owning a Ford Focus S from 2014-2016. I’ve heard the transmission can be an issue. What’s been your experience?

If the transmission is well-maintained or replaced, the Focus is fun to drive with good space for passengers and luggage (especially the hatchback). The aftermarket scene is solid, and the EcoBoost engine can be tuned to 200+ HP with an ECU remap. However, it’s not the most reliable car, so have some extra funds for maintenance.

Just don’t.

It’s a fun and stylish car with good handling. To my knowledge, the 2016 models don’t have the transmission issues because they use a conventional automatic. The 2012-2014 models with the problematic Powershift transmission are the ones to avoid.

Hi! I own a 2014 Focus. Here’s my breakdown:

Cons:

  1. Transmission (DPS6 Powershift) is flawed. It’s not a matter of if but when it will fail. There’s a class-action lawsuit and a 10-year extended warranty on the TCM and clutch pack assembly.
  2. Speed sensors often fail, especially with low battery voltage, leading to potential ABS module failure (expensive to fix).
  3. Coolant reservoir leaks can damage engine supports but are easy to fix.

Pros:

  1. Fun to drive with responsive handling, throttle, and brakes.
  2. Great tech for the price: front/back sensors, auto park, radar cruise control, auto headlights, etc.
  3. Parts are easier to find than people think, and there’s lots of aftermarket support.

Advice: If you’re set on a Focus, find one with full service records and a later model (2016-2018) to stay within the extended warranty for TCM failures. Otherwise, Toyota, Honda, or Mazda might be safer options.

How is your fuel consumption? And how much would a TCM replacement cost?

My 2.0L gets 6-7 km/l in city driving and about 8 km/l on long trips. TCM replacements abroad are quoted at $1,000+ USD, which is why some people sell the car instead of repairing it.
