I’m trying to decide between the Ford Fusion and the Focus. I know they’re both great cars, but I’m unsure of the key differences. Could anyone break it down for me?
I’d avoid the Focus unless it has a manual transmission. The automatic transmissions in some models tend to have issues. Otherwise, the Focus is a solid car. I’d personally go with the Fusion, especially with the 2.5l engine.
The big difference is reliability. The Focus (and Fiesta) have the PowerShift transmission, which has reliability problems. The Fusion is way more reliable.

Which year or generation of the Fusion are the most reliable?

I hate to bring up an old thread, but I have owned both. The Fusion uses a traditional 6-speed automatic, which honestly isn’t much better. I’ve owned both the Fusion and Focus.

Is the problem just with the transmission? I’ve been looking at used manual base Focuses or Fiestas with low mileage. They seem to have the 1.0 Ecoboost, which I’ve heard is a good engine.
There’s a clear difference, kind of like comparing a Toyota Corolla and a Toyota Camry. The Corolla is small and economical, while the Camry is bigger, roomier, and more practical. The Ford Focus is like the Corolla, and the Fusion is like the Camry. The Fusion is more reliable, and the Focus had some major transmission issues with the automatic. The Fusion is based on the Mazda 6, and Mercury made a version called the Milan. I’d suggest doing some research on both. Good luck!
@Zephyr
The Mercury version was the Lincoln Zephyr, not the Milan.

You’re right, it was the Lincoln Zephyr. Sorry, I’ve been under the weather, so my attention is a bit off. Thanks for the correction!
The Fusion is a midsize car, while the Focus is a compact car. The Focus comes in both sedan and hatchback versions, whereas the Fusion is only available as a sedan. The Fusion also offers a hybrid version.
If you’re looking at 2011 models, go for the Focus.
