What’s this repair gonna cost me

I had something similar happen when my wife drove into a ditch. Jeep Patriot here. Body shop quoted me $6-7K, but I fixed it myself for under $1000. No structural damage, just body panels. Used Car-parts dot com to find matching parts nearby. Now it looks brand new.

Looking at your pic, you might just need a hood, bumper, fender, and headlight. Hopefully, the motor and radiator are okay.

@Val
Thanks for the advice! Motor and radiator seem fine, and the car’s still driveable. I’ll check that site out.

@Val
Yeah, Car-parts is awesome. Did you need any special tools for the swap?

Not really, just basic stuff like a socket set and a pry bar. Some patience too, lol.

It depends—are you fixing it yourself or having a shop do it? Also, aftermarket parts or OEM? And are you filing an insurance claim or paying out of pocket? Short answer: you’re likely looking at over $1K, even on the low end.

@Frost
Probably going out of pocket for now. OEM vs aftermarket—any big difference?

OEM parts are from the manufacturer, so they fit better and last longer, but they cost more. Aftermarket parts are cheaper but might not fit as perfectly. For stuff like bumpers and headlights, aftermarket’s usually fine.

@Frost
Got it, thanks! I might go aftermarket then, just to keep costs down.

Hit up a breakers yard. You can grab a hood, bumper, and headlight there for cheap. Good as new. :+1:

What’s a breakers yard? Never heard of that term.

Oh, it’s like a junkyard where they sell parts from old or totaled cars. Super handy and way cheaper!

@Dane
Ohhh, got it. I’ll check that out—thanks!

Why not just ask a body shop? If you’re not sure how to assess the damage or find parts, it’s probably better to leave it to the pros.

Good point. I might get a quote just to compare, even if I end up DIYing it.

A lot.

Lol, yeah, that’s what I was afraid of.

I had worse damage from rear-ending someone at 25 mph last month. Body shop quoted me $10K. Insurance totaled the car and gave me $9K as payment.

Yikes, that’s rough. Glad insurance came through for you, though.

The repair cost? Money, most likely. :joy:
