Sometimes when I try to start my car, it makes a strange sound. It’s happening more now that the weather is cold. Anyone know what this could be?
That sounds like the fuel pump is dying. Usually, when you turn the key to ‘on,’ the fuel pump primes, but if it’s struggling, it could mean it’s wearing out.

Thanks! I’ll check on that.
It could be the starter solenoid. When you crank it, the solenoid engages the gear with the flywheel to start the engine. If it’s not engaging properly, that’s probably the issue.

Thanks for explaining! I’ll look into it.

Yep, I was going to say the same thing.
Could it be the fuel pump?
Sounds like a starter issue. Also, check if the ring gear has any damage.

Got it, I’ll take a look. Thanks!
Does the noise happen when you turn the key to ‘on,’ or only when you’re actually trying to start the engine?

It only happens when I’m trying to start it. I can turn on just the battery without any issues.
@Roan
In that case, it’s probably the starter. Hard to know for sure without looking at it, but that’s my guess.

No problem. Hope it’s an easy fix!
Quick update: after the third try, it started up normally.
This might be a guess, but my old Civic made a similar noise when the battery was dying. Replacing the battery fixed it.

Thanks for the idea! My battery is brand new though, so I don’t think that’s it.
Haha, exactly how I feel right now .
When you hear the noise, are you cranking it or just turning the key to ‘on’?
