I have a 2012 Ford Focus SE with a 2.0L engine, 70,000 miles, and an automatic transmission. The car won’t start, and the gear indicator on the dashboard doesn’t show when I shift from Park to any other gear.
I remember reading about a potential issue where a chip or part might start malfunctioning. Could this be a recall issue?
Last time I drove it, I parked the car and when I came back, it wouldn’t start. I’ve replaced the battery and had the alternator and starter checked. Does anyone know if this is a common problem with this make and model?
TCM I’m the second owner of a 2012 Ford Focus SE. The first owner didn’t keep up with the warranty or recalls, and I know they didn’t get an extended warranty. I noticed the same issue with the car a few months before I bought it. The previous owner said they would fix it, but I don’t think they ever did.
Is the Transmission Control Module (TCM) part of a recall? And can recalls still be fixed on a 2012 model? Will dealerships handle recalls even if the car isn’t running?
A TCM failure usually shows specific transmission messages. It sounds more like you might have an electrical issue, a problem with the brake pedal sensor, or the shift lever sensors.
you can try holding the key in the crank position for about 30 seconds. Listen for any clicking or grinding noises while you hold the key. If you hear any, wait until the noises stop. If the engine still doesn’t crank on its own after the noises stop, turn the key off and then back to the crank position.
I tried starting it in every gear, but it still won’t crank, even with a new battery. I also had the alternator and starter tested, and they were fine.
When I shift from Park to Neutral, the dashboard still shows it’s in Park. It still won’t start no matter which gear I’m in.
