I own a 2018 Ford Focus, and I’ll have it paid off this month! It’s been a great car so far, with 55k on it. I’ve undercoated it annually and stayed on top of oil changes. What else can I do to keep it going strong?
The DCT transmission tends to fail around 100k. Clutch packs are known to fry, and repairs can take months. It’s a fun car, but the transmission design is flawed. If it starts chugging between gears, it might be a sign it’s failing.
@Chen
Thanks for the heads-up! I’ve taken great care of it, but I’m worried about that transmission issue. Too bad they didn’t recall the 2018 model.
Increase your oil change frequency as mileage increases, especially if turbocharged. Switch to full synthetic over 75k miles. Don’t forget to change other fluids: brake, power steering, transmission, and coolant. Annual cooling system flushes are key to longevity.
@Keir
Thanks! I don’t think it’s turbocharged, but I’m on top of oil changes every 4k. I’ll look into those other fluid changes too.
Plan for maintenance around 100k—tune-ups, brakes, and other wear-and-tear items. Saving up in advance can help.
I’ve got 218k on my Focus, and one clutch/actuator replacement at 189k. People who complain about the DPS6 often drive aggressively. If you drive carefully, it can last longer.
We had these in our rental fleet. They were fine up to 80k km but always had laggy shifting. If yours is still running well, you’ve done a great job maintaining it!

Thanks! I’ve worked hard to keep it in great shape. That transmission issue is always at the back of my mind, though.
Update: My Focus now has 58,000 km. Should I change the transmission fluid or any other fluids? I want to ensure it stays in top condition.

Yes, a transmission fluid drain and refill (not a flush) is a good idea. Also consider changing brake fluid and coolant soon.
Drive it gently, and avoid hard acceleration. These transmissions last longer if you’re not aggressive with them.

Good tip—thank you! I’ll make sure to keep driving cautiously.
