Picked up a cheap SVT… any advice?

Get that timing belt done ASAP. Make sure to use the correct tensioner because it has a different spring rate than the regular Zetec—2 lbs vs 1 lb. Using the wrong one can make the belt jump teeth at high RPM. If the radio volume knob is giving you trouble, you can clean it with some contact cleaner, but you’ll need to take apart the stereo. Not too bad if you’ve got some small screwdrivers.

Thanks for the info! Are there any good SVT sites to look for parts? Most of the old forum shops seem to be out of stock or gone.

Not many resources left, unfortunately, but the Facebook groups are still active. For parts, RockAuto has a lot available.

Swapping the radio is super easy if it’s anything like my ‘06 ZX3 S. Just get a Metra adapter and matching wires, and you’re good to go. If you still have the factory FM transmitter (small black box under the hood near the passenger strut), consider removing it. They can come loose, causing a short and blowing the PCM fuse, which kills power mid-drive. Ask me how I know!

@Jules
Thanks! I looked into the radio harness, and it’s got extra plugs for the sub and wheel controls (seems like they all came with the audiophile package?). Kinda freaked out by the unique connectors going into other connectors. Feels confusing.

Totally unrelated, but as a Brit, the front bumper design always makes me laugh. Anyone know why it sticks out more than in other markets?

American safety standards :tada: It does look kind of funny, but hey, it’s back in style after 20 years!

@Haru
The first time I saw it, I thought it was an aftermarket mod!

Also, I always find it odd seeing sedan versions. The first one I saw was on Stone Cold Steve Austin’s Instagram, of all places.

Does the British SVT Focus have a different bumper style? I read somewhere that the look might be a nod to rally cars with those big fog lights. The regular ZX5 here has a slimmer bumper. Fun stuff!

@Haru
Yep, the SVT and ST170 bumpers are different. I’d pay good money to get an SVT bumper over here in Europe, but shipping costs are crazy.

I thought the same thing—front end looks odd with the indicators in the bumper. Not a fan of the grille, but I guess different places, different styles.

Super jealous… when can you pick me up?

Does it have a timing belt or a chain? Mine’s a chain, so it’s basically lifetime.

Pretty sure 2004 and earlier models have a belt, while 2005 and up switched to a chain.

It’s got a belt, which freaks me out since it’s an interference engine!

The steering wheel controls work perfectly for me.

Did you need a special harness for them?

Nope, they come stock with controls to the left of the steering column. You’ve got seek, volume, etc. Setting the time or adjusting bass/treble can be tricky, but once it’s set, the controls work great.

Just got another SVT myself—if you pull that radio, I want it!
