Hi everyone! I’m in the process of buying my first car and feeling a bit overwhelmed. I’ve just put $2000 down on a 2014 Ford Focus with 86k miles, but I’m getting cold feet after hearing about some lower ratings for this model year. My family is pretty set on me getting this car, but I originally wanted a Toyota or Honda, which are out of my budget right now. Any advice on whether I should stick with the Focus or look for something else?
If it’s an automatic, just know that Ford’s DCT (dual-clutch transmission) on these models has a reputation for issues. If it’s manual, you should be in the clear for a lot longer. Honda or Toyota would definitely be solid alternatives, but if you go with the Focus, see if you can get any maintenance history on it, especially on the transmission.
@Vance
But definitely not a Nissan with a CVT transmission from around 2005–2017. They’ve had their own problems! And on the paint front, Ford’s paint isn’t amazing either, but better than what we’ve seen on newer Nissans.
@Shane
Yeah, totally agree! Those CVTs in Nissans are just as much of a gamble.
I wouldn’t go for it unless it’s a manual transmission.
I was in the same boat. Toyota and Honda were out of my range, so I settled on a 2015 Focus with 150k miles. I’ve put over $8k into transmission repairs since then, which is way more than the car is worth. If I could go back, I’d tell myself to save up and wait for a Toyota or Honda. Just my two cents.
A high-mileage Toyota or Honda is still probably a safer bet than a 2014 Focus automatic. If you’re on the highway a lot, maybe it’ll be okay, but problems can add up.
I’m amazed at how folks buy a car without digging into it more. I basically paid a second mortgage just on transmission issues for my Focus. Yeah, some people have good luck with these, but I’ve replaced tons of clutches, TCMs, actuators, and seals over the years. My advice? Just… don’t.
Pass on it if you can. You’ll pay at least $1k if any transmission repairs pop up. Try to find a Honda if possible.
Is there any Ford model out there worth going for? Not seeing much love for the Focus here.
If you go with the Focus, stick to a manual transmission. And if you can find a diesel version, even better. Just avoid the automatics.
I’ve got a 2015 SE sedan, and the DCT issues started around 70k miles. I couldn’t drive it for six months while waiting on repairs. I want to love the car, but Ford hasn’t done enough to fix these transmission issues. If you really like the Focus, make sure you have a backup plan and funds for repairs.
Was in your shoes recently, bought a 2014 Focus SE. Worked great at first, then the transmission failed. Dealer said it was a clutch issue and refused warranty repairs. If I could go back, I wouldn’t waste my time or money.
I’ve had a 2012 Focus Automatic for three years now. Had the TCM replaced twice – once at 70k and again at 145k under Ford’s satisfaction program. Hoping it holds out long enough for me to save up for something better.
Unless you’re getting a big discount (over $3k savings), I’d avoid it. I bought one cheap, so I’m ready to take on repairs if needed.
Just don’t do it.
I’ve had a Focus Titanium for 10 years. Had the TCM reprogrammed a few times, then replaced entirely. It’s working better, but I still don’t fully trust it. Please do some research on this car model.
It’s a tough choice. My 2012 Focus has had issues, but I’ve kept it going by staying ahead on maintenance. If you’re really sold on it, just be ready for potential repairs.
I’ve put 110k miles on my 2012 Focus with a stick shift, and it’s been incredibly reliable. I’d stick with a manual if you decide on the Focus.
If it’s still in good shape, not a bad price! I got my 2014 auto for $8,200 in 2019 and it’s still rolling at nearly 140k.
